I always seem to find motivation in the springtime to get more healthy and fit. There is definitely a connection to the “beach body” advertising you see everywhere that puts pressure on women to slim down and get tanned in time for summer. Even though I actively disagree and loathe these misogynist advertising standards, they play on a notion of an upcoming season where your body will be more exposed and therefore it’s a good time to start thinking about how we feel about our bodies.

We don’t need to slim down or get a tan to feel good about our bodies. It could even be the absolute opposite of that. I used to try and stay away from the sun as much as possible to keep my complexion fair as I preferred that and felt good about myself that way. The point is that the “ideal female body” we see in media is only ideal for some people (a minority if I may add!) and we should all strive to find what what is ideal for us.

I feel like I need to make this point as I’m about to talk about weight loss. I am by no means overweight (BMI of 22.3), however I am very aware of my body and my emotional connections to my weight, muscle mass, and overall well being. I normally loose weight when I’m not happy or when I’m really happy. When I’m in-between I’ve got a tendency to gain weight.

I go up and down in weight all the time, but only about 3 kilos either way. Recently I was at my very upper limit of where I’m comfortable being. And it’s not just the number on the scale I’m talking about, it’s about how I feel. I didn’t want to wear some of my clothes, I felt uncomfortable in my own skin, and I  wasn’t as confident as I would normally be.

At this time I happened to be invited to an event for the launch of the new XLS-Nutrition shakes. I didn’t have any expectations of the product as it was brand new and I haven’t really tried any meal replacement shakes before. To give you some more info on them before I go on to telling you about my experience with them, here’s the product description from their website:

“NEW XLS-Nutrition is a special combination of high quality proteins, all your essential vitamins, minerals and macronutrients.

As part of a calorie reduced diet, XLS-Nutrition replaces an entire meal and has fewer than 250 calories while providing you with all your essential vitamins and minerals. Vitamin B5 and B12 promote normal energy metabolism, and vitamin B6 promotes normal protein and glycogen metabolism. Ultimately maintaining your energy requirements and helping you reach your weight loss goals whilst utilising your fat reserves from day one.”

I took some product with me home from the event with the idea in mind that I would try it to see if I liked it and if I did, perhaps switch out a few meals a week when I’m in a hurry and don’t have time to cook or grab breakfast. As every shake is about 250 calories, it’s perfect as a healthy replacement for any meal, as long as you have regular healthy snacks as well.

What actually happened was very similar to that, but it also had other effects on me that I didn’t expect! I think it was a combination of seeing the immediate effects of eating slightly less (less bloating etc) together with the knowledge of me doing something good for myself, that led to me getting back into the routine of being healthy and even going back to the gym. The XLS-Nutrition replacement shakes basically acted as a catalyst for me to get back into shape.

In about 3 weeks, I lost 1.5 kilos. And I don’t really feel like I’ve changed much in my routine for that to happen!

And as for the flavour, I really like the chocolate flavour as well as the strawberry. It’s easy to drink and it does actually fill you up. Not for as long as a big meal though, so you need to snack of course! The only drawback is the consistency IF you leave it for too long. You mix the powder with cold milk (the colder the better) and then drink, but if you leave it after you’ve mixed for more than a few minutes it does get quite thick which makes it’s a bit difficult to drink.

TLDR version: I wanted to loose a little bit of weight, I started using the XLS-Nutrition replacement shakes a few times a week and it made me get into the swing of being healthy and I’ve already lost 1.5 kilos without much effort!

Now it’s your turn

Everyone is different, what works for me might not work for you. And again, weight loss isn’t for everyone either. Perhaps you should just focus on building muscle? But if you know that you need a bit of help to kick-start a bit of weight loss, I can definitely recommend the XLS-Nutrition replacement shakes. And if you’re feeling lucky, enter the giveaway below and you can win 6 tins of the product and a shaker! UK entrants only and must be over 18. The competition closes on the 11th of June at midnight and the winner will be announced within 24 hours and will have 48 hours to claim the prize by replying to my email. Good luck! a Rafflecopter giveaway
